Totally normal at any age. Just explain (over and over!) that it is okay, but is something that needs to be done in private.
I would wonder where he got the idea that it makes him a big boy too, though...maybe talk to the preschool to see if he has been exposed to anything unordinary...

Don't tell him not to do that or you will ruin him for later. Masturbation is normal and he's just exploring his body. It's not sexual for kids his age and you shouldn't make him feel ashamed for doing it. Perhaps it's time to teach him the words penis and vagina as well. It's not called a "peter.

Isn't it amazing how they have this fascination with their "stuff", normal little boy. AS long as he's not doing it in public, I wouldn't be worried. At some point you may have to explain to him that that's private.

It is not uncommon for young children to do this (I get the question all the time).

What is possibly concerning is his reference to being a big boy. It suggests he may have seen some of the other boys. But much more likely, everything he is doing is to be a big boy. I had a patient who wrapped himself in his father's ties to be a big boy.

Try talking to him about being a big boy. I wouldn't focus on him being "awake", as you put it. He will probably tell you that he wants to have the big boy lunch or use the big boy toilet. Then relax and show him how to tie his own big boy shoes. If he describes the big boys doing something of concern, keep in mind that children that age are very imaginative, but pursue it further.
